Georgia: A police officer was fatally shot and a second critically wounded Sunday morning during what began as a routine investigation at a hotel near Stone Mountain, authorities said.
Gwinnett County police responded around 7:30 a.m. to a report of possible credit card fraud at a hotel on East Park Place Boulevard about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. The caller, from another state, alerted police that someone had used their card to rent a room, according to officials.
Officers Pradeep Tamang, 25, and Cpl. David Reed made contact with the suspect inside that room after being directed there by hotel staff. At some point during the encounter, the suspect produced a handgun and opened fire on the officers, police said.
Tamang, who joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in 2025 and was originally from Nepal, was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries at a hospital. Reed was also shot and remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Police returned fire, wounding the suspect, identified by authorities as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur. He was also treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure described the incident as an “unprovoked attack” and said the investigation is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically leads inquiries into law enforcement shootings.
Local and state officials expressed condolences for the fallen officer and urged community support for the wounded officer and their families. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp acknowledged the sacrifice made by the officers and noted the risks law enforcement faces daily.
This marks a somber moment for the Gwinnett County Police Department and the larger law enforcement community in Georgia as they mourn the loss of one of their own while praying for the recovery of another.
