Palestinian solution is essential for lasting regional stability
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi delivered a high-profile address at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, centring the Palestinian cause as the ‘essence of regional stability’. Speaking to global leaders, El-Sisi underscored that a just resolution to the conflict is not merely a humanitarian necessity but a prerequisite for broader Middle Eastern peace and economic prosperity. He praised the launch of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, following the landmark Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025, which brought an end to over two years of devastating hostilities.
New Board of Peace aims to oversee Gaza security
Shortly after his speech, Egypt’s foreign ministry officially announced that El-Sisi accepted an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join a newly formed ‘Board of Peace’, a collaborative executive body aimed at overseeing the implementation of a comprehensive roadmap for lasting security and reconstruction in Gaza.
El-Sisi highlights economic toll of conflict, including $9bn Suez Canal losses
The President also highlighted the severe economic toll the regional unrest has taken on Egypt, specifically citing the disruption of the Suez Canal. He revealed that the conflict and subsequent Red Sea maritime attacks have cost the Egyptian economy approximately $9 billion in direct revenue losses as shipping lines were forced to reroute around Africa.
Despite these challenges, El-Sisi utilised the Davos platform to champion Egypt’s internal infrastructure overhaul and invite international investors to the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Positioning Egypt as a ‘stabilising force’, he reiterated Cairo's commitment to restoring state institutions across neighbouring nations like Libya and Sudan, while urging the global community to accelerate humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts in the war-ravaged Gaza enclave.
