Vancouver: Canada’s transport authorities have raised a serious aviation safety concern after an Air India pilot was removed from duty at Vancouver airport following allegations that he was under the influence of alcohol, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Transport Canada flagged the issue after a complaint by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which questioned the pilot’s fitness for duty before the departure of Air India flight AI186 from Vancouver to Delhi via Vienna on December 23, 2025.
Air India confirmed that the flight experienced a last-minute delay after one of the cockpit crew members was offloaded prior to departure. The airline said Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilot’s condition, prompting further inquiry.
“In accordance with safety protocols, an alternate pilot was rostered to operate the flight,” an Air India spokesperson said, adding that the airline regretted the inconvenience caused to passengers and was fully cooperating with local authorities.
The spokesperson further confirmed that the pilot has been taken off flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation. “Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations. Any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action in line with company policy,” the airline said.
Canadian authorities have not publicly disclosed further details as the inquiry continues.
