Berlin has signaled a strong commitment to advancing U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East peace initiative, describing it as a “unique opportunity” to stabilize the region, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Sunday ahead of his diplomatic visit to Qatar and Kuwait.

“For the swift implementation of the American plan, rapid international cooperation is essential,” Wadephul emphasized, stressing Berlin’s readiness to play an active role. Germany plans to present “concrete offers” as a partner in humanitarian aid, reconstruction, and long-term stabilization efforts in Gaza.

Wadephul underlined the broader goal: lasting security for all, a political pathway for the Palestinians, and the eventual normalization of relations between Israel and its neighbors.

The remarks come nearly two years after the October 2023 attacks, as Israeli and Hamas negotiators were set to hold indirect talks in Cairo on Sunday regarding Trump’s plan to end the Gaza conflict and secure the release of Israel’s remaining hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope that the releases could occur “in the coming days,” while Hamas partially endorsed the plan on Friday.

During his visit, Wadephul is scheduled to meet Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani to discuss the “immediate release” of hostages, including German nationals. He will also attend Gulf Cooperation Council meetings with EU and regional representatives in Kuwait on Sunday and Monday.

Germany’s proactive stance highlights its ambition to act as a stabilizing force in the Middle East while supporting humanitarian efforts and international cooperation.
