Tragedy Strikes Pilgrims as Church Scaffolding Collapses in Ethiopia

A quiet day of devotion turned into a scene of heartbreak in Arerti, a small town just 70 kilometres east of Addis Ababa. On Wednesday, a makeshift scaffolding at a local church gave way, sending a wave of panic and devastation through the congregation.

According to state media, at least 22 worshippers lost their lives, and 55 others were rushed to hospitals with injuries. Local officials told the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) that many more could still be trapped beneath the wreckage, as rescuers worked urgently to clear the debris.

Eyewitnesses described the sudden collapse as “chaotic and terrifying,” with the faithful caught in an unexpected nightmare during what was meant to be a peaceful gathering. Emergency teams and community volunteers rushed to the site, racing against time to rescue those buried under the shattered scaffolding.

This tragic event has cast a somber shadow over Arerti, a town known for its deep-rooted spiritual traditions. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the collapse, while communities mourn the loss of lives in a moment meant for faith and reflection.
