Beijing witnessed a grand military parade on Wednesday, featuring underwater drones, massive missiles, and laser weapons, highlighting China’s growing military strength amid ongoing tensions with the United States. The event was attended by several foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In a speech before the parade marking 80 years since China’s victory over Japan in World War II, President Xi Jinping described the nation as “unstoppable.” Following his speech, the latest Chinese military hardware passed through Tiananmen Square as cheering crowds watched.
New Long-Range Missiles
One of the parade’s main attractions was the DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), part of China’s “Dongfeng” missile series. These liquid-fuelled nuclear weapons were carried on camouflaged military vehicles. The DF-5C is reportedly capable of striking any location on Earth and is seen as a key deterrent against potential threats.
Unmanned Underwater Vehicles
China displayed two large unmanned underwater drones, the AJX002 and HSU100, mounted on trucks. Experts suggest the AJX002 is designed for reconnaissance, while the HSU100 may serve as an unmanned minelaying system. Despite trailing the United States in surface naval power, China has the world’s largest program for extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicles.
Supersonic and Hypersonic Missiles
Four new anti-ship missiles – the YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20 – were also showcased. Capable of being launched from ships or aircraft, these missiles are designed to strike large vessels. Some models, such as the YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20, may reach hypersonic speeds, flying at more than five times the speed of sound.
Laser Weapons
A highlight of the parade was the LY-1 laser air defense system, described as one of the world’s most powerful. Mounted on long vehicles, the LY-1 is reportedly in advanced testing and represents China’s push into high-precision, cost-effective “directed-energy weapons.”
Unmanned Surface and Land Vehicles
The parade also featured unmanned surface vessels capable of mine-clearing and optionally crewed operations, along with drones for reconnaissance, transport, and evacuation. Several unmanned aircraft and land vehicles highlighted the versatility of China’s drone programs.
Radar and Early Warning Systems
Early warning radar technology was prominently displayed, including airborne radar on the new KJ-600 early warning aircraft. Designed for use on aircraft carriers, the KJ-600 is expected to operate on China’s Fujian vessel in the near future.
The parade underscored China’s rapid military advancements, with a focus on missiles, drones, laser systems, and advanced surveillance technology, signaling its ambitions on the global stage.
