The Kremlin said Wednesday it is against European countries sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine and dismissed the idea of a rapid meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow “views such discussions negatively” and stressed that one of Russia’s main goals in the conflict, which began in February 2022, is to prevent NATO countries from having a military presence in Ukraine.

Ukraine has been seeking Western-backed security guarantees to ensure Russia does not launch another attack, while Russia continues to demand that Kyiv cede more territory in the east.

Peskov described Ukraine’s security guarantees as “one of the most important topics” in settlement talks but declined to provide details publicly.

He also said that any summit between Putin and Zelensky would need careful preparation to be effective. While the Russian and Ukrainian negotiating teams remain in contact, no date has been set for future talks.
