A new chapter began today at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) as U.S. Navy Admiral Brad Cooper officially took over command from U.S. Army General Michael Erik Kurilla during a ceremony at the Tampa Convention Center.

The event was attended by senior U.S. Department of Defense officials and defense leaders from partner nations worldwide, highlighting the importance of CENTCOM’s mission.

Gen. Kurilla, who has led CENTCOM since April 2022, played a key role in maintaining security and stability across the Middle East. He oversaw the defeat of ISIS in several operations and planned more than 15 major joint combat missions, including “Operations Rough Rider” and “Midnight Hammer.”

Reflecting on his service, Gen. Kurilla said, “It has been the honor of my life to lead the brave men and women of Central Command. I am confident they will continue to succeed under Admiral Cooper’s leadership.”

Adm. Cooper, a 1989 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a master’s degree in strategic intelligence, previously served as CENTCOM’s deputy commander. Now, he will oversee all U.S. military operations in a region covering 21 countries across the Middle East and Central Asia.

Praising his predecessor, Adm. Cooper said, “General Kurilla has strengthened partnerships, increased our force capabilities, and protected Americans and civilians abroad. I’m honored to lead this team in continuing the mission of regional security and stability.”
