Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has claimed that Israel attempted to assassinate him during the recent 12-day conflict between the two countries.
In an interview released on Monday with American media host Tucker Carlson, President Pezeshkian said, “They did try, yes. They acted accordingly, but they failed.” He explained that the attempt happened while he was attending a meeting that was allegedly targeted in a bombing.
“It was not the United States that was behind the attempt on my life. It was Israel,” Pezeshkian said, according to a translation of his remarks from Persian. He did not confirm if the attack took place during the recent conflict, which saw heightened tensions and exchanges between Iran and Israel.
Despite the serious accusation, the Iranian president struck a more conciliatory tone when speaking about future diplomacy with the U.S. Pezeshkian said that Iran is open to restarting nuclear negotiations — if trust between the two countries can be rebuilt.
“We see no problem in re-entering the negotiations,” he stated. “There is a condition... for restarting the talks. How are we going to trust the United States again?”
The comments mark the first major public statements from Pezeshkian on international relations since taking office, signaling both caution and willingness for dialogue in the face of regional and global tensions.
