Boeing has issued a statement following the tragic crash of an Air India Dreamliner shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, confirming that it is aware of the incident and is actively working to gather more information.

“We are aware of initial reports and are working to gather more information,” Boeing India said in a brief message shared with the media. The company also expressed its concern for the passengers, crew, and all affected.

The aircraft involved, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered as VT-ANB, was operating as flight AI171 from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. The plane took off at 1:38 PM local time but tragically crashed just five minutes later into a densely populated residential area in Meghani Nagar.

The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian passenger. Air India confirmed that the plane issued a distress call (MAYDAY) shortly after takeoff but lost contact with Air Traffic Control shortly thereafter.

Authorities have confirmed a significant number of casualties, although the full extent is still being assessed. Many of the injured have been transported to nearby hospitals, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Air India stated that it is fully cooperating with the investigation and has activated a dedicated helpline for the families of those on board: 1800 5691 444.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that the aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a veteran pilot with over 8,000 hours of flying experience, and First Officer Clive Kundar, who had completed 1,100 hours.

Heavy smoke was seen billowing from the crash site, and visuals of the accident have spread widely on social media, prompting a wave of condolences and concern from both domestic and international leaders.

As the investigation unfolds, Boeing said it will provide support to both Air India and the relevant authorities.
