Ukraine woke to the sound of explosions as Kyiv and Odesa were targeted in a massive overnight assault by Russian forces, involving a barrage of ballistic missiles and Shahed drones.
In what President Volodymyr Zelensky described as "one of the largest attacks on Kyiv during the full-scale war," air defense systems lit up the skies over the capital in the early hours of June 10. Residents across Kyiv reported hearing multiple explosions as drones and missiles were intercepted overhead.
Local authorities confirmed four people were injured in Kyiv as debris from intercepted projectiles fell across different districts. The attack also took a grim toll in Odesa, where two men were killed and at least eight civilians were wounded. Another individual was treated for shock, according to officials.
President Zelensky condemned the attack in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, highlighting the disconnect between global peace efforts and Russia's continued aggression.
“Russian missile and Shahed strikes drown out the efforts of the United States and others around the world to force Russia into peace,” he wrote. “For yet another night, instead of a ceasefire, there were massive strikes with Shahed drones, cruise and ballistic missiles.”
Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground confirmed the scale of the assault, reporting relentless drone activity and numerous blasts echoing through the city.
The overnight bombardment is the latest in a series of escalating attacks on Ukrainian cities, as Russian forces intensify pressure ahead of critical international talks.
