Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has publicly floated the idea of launching a new political party in the United States, responding to growing dissatisfaction with the traditional two-party system and following a recent public feud with former President Donald Trump.
On Thursday, Musk posted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), asking users whether America needed a new political party. The results, revealed on Friday, showed that 80% of respondents supported the idea. Reacting to the poll, Musk declared, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate.”
He also announced the name of the prospective political movement: The America Party.
Context of the Feud with Trump
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Musk and Donald Trump. Musk, who had publicly backed Trump in the November 2024 presidential election, has recently criticized the former president's proposed “Big Beautiful” spending bill, labeling it an “abomination.”
In retaliation, Trump expressed his disappointment with Musk during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and threatened to cancel all federal contracts awarded to Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. Musk responded provocatively, claiming Trump would not have won the election without his support and accusing Trump of “ingratitude.”
At one point, Musk threatened to decommission SpaceX’s Falcon rockets in response to Trump’s threats, though he later withdrew this statement. Musk also alleged that Trump’s name appears in the so-called “Epstein files,” implying a controversial reason behind the lack of public disclosure.
Political Landscape and Challenges Ahead
Musk’s proposal to create The America Party aims to challenge the dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties, which have ruled U.S. politics for over a century. While the U.S. Constitution does not prohibit third parties, the last time a non-traditional party candidate won the presidency was in 1850, making the path forward highly challenging.
Political analysts say Musk’s immense public profile and influence could bring significant attention to the new party. However, building a viable political organization capable of winning elections requires grassroots support, strong leadership, and a clear platform—elements that remain to be seen.
What’s Next?
Elon Musk’s announcement has sparked intense debate across social media and political circles. Supporters argue that America needs fresh alternatives to represent moderate voters, while critics question whether a billionaire entrepreneur with no political experience can effectively reshape the country’s political system.
As the idea of The America Party takes shape, all eyes will be on Musk to see if he can turn this bold vision into a reality or if it remains a symbolic protest against the existing political status quo.
