The White House confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a brief meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh on Wednesday, as part of his official visit to Saudi Arabia.
A senior U.S. official stated that, "The President has agreed to greet the Syrian leader during his time in Saudi Arabia tomorrow."
The meeting comes as President Ahmed al-Sharaa pushes for the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria. Shortly after his discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday, President Trump indicated that the United States is prepared to lift sanctions on Syria.
Washington has long maintained that certain conditions must be met before any easing of sanctions, including firm commitments from Syria to protect minority rights and implement broader reforms.
President al-Sharaa took office following the ouster of former leader Bashar al-Assad in December, bringing an end to Syria’s 13-year civil war.
Earlier on Tuesday, President Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman co-chaired the Saudi-U.S. Summit at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh. The summit focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding strategic cooperation across economic, defense, and technological sectors.
Regional and international issues were also on the agenda, with both leaders emphasizing continued efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East.
President Trump was welcomed with an official ceremony that included a traditional horse escort and the playing of the national anthems of both nations.
