Jordan’s King Abdullah II has welcomed Saudi Arabia’s steadfast support for the rights of the Palestinian people, as tensions rise following controversial remarks from US President Donald Trump.
During a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, King Abdullah expressed his appreciation for the Kingdom’s unwavering position on Palestine, a day after Trump suggested the forced removal of Palestinians from Gaza to enable US control over the territory.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump stated: “The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too; we’ll own it.” His comments have sparked widespread condemnation across the Arab world.
In their discussion, King Abdullah and the Saudi crown prince addressed the latest regional developments and emphasized the need to safeguard security and stability, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Earlier on Wednesday, King Abdullah met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, where he categorically rejected “any attempts” to take control of Palestinian territories or displace its people.
Following Trump’s remarks, Saudi authorities swiftly issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to the Palestinian cause. The statement emphasized that the Kingdom’s position on the establishment of a Palestinian state remains resolute and condemned any attempts to forcibly remove Palestinians from their land.
“Saudi Arabia will continue its relentless efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel without that,” the statement read.
The Saudi government also underscored that achieving a lasting and just peace is impossible without ensuring the Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights, in line with international resolutions. The statement reiterated that this stance has been consistently communicated to both past and present US administrations.
The latest developments underscore growing tensions over US policy in the region, with Arab leaders uniting in opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians. As diplomatic efforts continue, both Jordan and Saudi Arabia reaffirm their commitment to a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian issue.
