Etihad Airways Expands Widebody Fleet With Major Airbus Order

 Becomes New A330neo Customer

Etihad Airways has taken a major leap in its fleet modernization strategy, unveiling a sweeping expansion of its Airbus widebody lineup at the Dubai Airshow. The Abu Dhabi national carrier confirmed a firm order for six A330-900s—officially becoming the newest A330neo customer—alongside additional commitments for both passenger and cargo variants of the A350.

The announcement includes seven more A350-1000s, bringing Etihad’s total for the type to 27 aircraft, and three A350F freighters, increasing its A350F orderbook to 10. The deal was complemented by a separate agreement to lease nine A330-900s from global lessor Avolon, further boosting the airline’s medium-haul capabilities.

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said the fleet expansion is designed to elevate performance across the carrier’s growing network.
“These aircraft strengthen our operations across medium-haul, long-haul, and cargo,” he said. “The A330neo offers the perfect balance of efficiency and flexibility, while the A350-1000 continues to excel on long-range missions. With the A350F, we’re significantly enhancing our cargo capacity as global demand grows. Our partnership with Airbus remains central to building one of the world’s most modern and efficient widebody fleets.”

Airbus echoed the sentiment, highlighting the strategic importance of the collaboration.
“Etihad Airways’ continued investment in next-generation widebody aircraft reflects the strength of our partnership,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP of Sales. “The A350 Family combined with the A330neo will give Etihad unmatched flexibility and efficiency as it continues its growth journey.”

The Airbus lineup ordered by Etihad represents some of the aviation industry’s most advanced technology.

  • The A350, capable of flying up to 9,700 nautical miles (18,000 km), features cutting-edge aerodynamics and lightweight materials, delivering a 25% reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation jets.

  • The A350F, currently under assembly in Toulouse, includes the sector’s largest main deck cargo door and will be the only freighter fully compliant with ICAO’s enhanced 2027 emissions standards.

  • The A330neo, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, offers a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency and introduces the award-winning Airspace cabin, designed for a superior passenger experience.

With these orders, Etihad Airways continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable, long-range aviation—reinforcing the UAE’s growing influence in the global aerospace sector.
