Modrić leads Croatia into must-win clash with Ghana

Croatia and Ghana meet at Philadelphia Stadium tonight at 12am (Bahrain time) in a crucial Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both sides still fighting for qualification to the knockout stage.

Separated by just one place and one point in the standings, the match is effectively a winner-takes-all encounter. Ghana will secure a last-32 place if they avoid defeat, while Croatia must win to guarantee progression and avoid the risk of a nervy third-placed finish.

Croatia arrive boosted by a crucial 1-0 win over Panama, a result that followed a heavy opening defeat to England. That victory marked a milestone moment for Luka Modrić, who made his 200th international appearance and helped his side regain control of their qualification hopes.

After conceding four goals in their opener, Zlatko Dalić’s side tightened up defensively against Panama, but their attacking output remained limited. A second-half strike from Ante Budimir proved enough, as the Europeans secured their first win of the campaign and put their fate back in their own hands.

However, Croatia still cannot settle for a draw, as anything less than victory could leave them dependent on other results, including England’s meeting with Panama.

Ghana head into the contest unbeaten in their last outing after a disciplined 0-0 draw with England. Despite having less than 25% possession, the Black Stars produced a resilient defensive display that earned widespread praise, with England boss Thomas Tuchel describing it as one of the most organised performances he has seen.

Ghana remain just behind England on goal difference and are in a strong position, knowing that even a draw would be enough to take them through. They have not reached the knockout stages since their historic run to the quarter-finals in 2010.

Squad update

Ghana will be without goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, who remains sidelined with a muscle injury sustained earlier in the tournament. Benjamin Asare is expected to continue in goal after an impressive display against England, where he made several key saves. Carlos Queiroz’s side is otherwise expected to have a fully fit squad available, while Croatia are also expected to be at full strength.
