Majid bags top spot in Captains’ Drive-in golf

Yousif Majid (36 points) narrowly won category one of the Royal Golf Club’s annual Captains’ Drive-In Tournament, ahead of runner-up Peter O’Brien (35), while Arun Varma (35) clinched first place in the second category of the competition with Naeem Ulla Khan (34) in second place.

Jamie Bowen (38) topped the third category followed by runner-up Sam Morrison (35).

Around 60 members competed in the Individual Stableford tournament, which is held annually to mark the official start of the new tenure of the Club’s Captains. 

This year, Jason Smith will be representing the golfing gents while Karin Lutz represents the ladies.

Both captains will act as a liaison between the Club management and the members and will also stage fund raising events throughout the year for their chosen charities.

The two captains made their official drives off the 10th tee and competitors had the chance to buy a flag in advance and use it to mark where they thought the captains’ drives would land. The money raised from the flag sales will go to the captain’s chosen charities.

Arun Varma also took first place in the annual Past Captains’ Quaich which was played in tandem with the Captains’ Drive In. Five former captains of the Royal Golf Club battled it out for the illustrious Captains’ Quaich trophy and annual bragging rights.

Category 2 (10–18): 1 Arun Varma (35), 2 Naeem Ulla Khan (34).

Category 3 (19–28/36): 1 Jamie Bowen (38), 2 Sam Morrison (35).

Captains’ Quaich: 1 Arun Varma (35). 

Gents Nearest the Pin: Murtuz Zamanly (hole 2).  Ladies Nearest the Pin: Stacey Thomas (hole 12).
