Double delight drives Muharraq forward
Bahrain champions set sights on WASL
Muharraq head into the 2025-26 FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) Gulf competition as Bahrain’s sole representatives, carrying the momentum of a historic domestic double. The tournament tips off on 13 October.
The club clinched the Zain Bahrain Basketball League title by edging Al Ahli 80-76 in a decisive Game 5, adding it to their Khalifa bin Salman Cup title. It was only the second time in their history they have secured both trophies in the same season.
Muharraq’s group
That campaign booked Muharraq’s return to WASL, where they have been drawn into Group A alongside Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad, Kuwait’s Kazma and UAE champions Shabab Al Ahli. Group B features Kuwait Club, Al Arabi of Qatar, Al Sharjah of the UAE and Saudi newcomers Al Ula.
The FIBA Regional Office-Asia confirmed the line-up for the league’s third edition on 10 September, noting a new qualification pathway for the Final 8. Seven teams – up from six – will advance, with the fourth-placed clubs in each Sub-Zone League playing for the final ticket alongside the podium finishers.
