Marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity, Dubai-based airline flydubai resumed its operations to Syria with the launch of direct daily flights to Damascus after nearly 12 years of suspension. The inaugural flight, FZ 115, landed at Damascus International Airport (DAM) to a traditional water cannon salute, signifying a fresh chapter in UAE–Syria aviation ties.
The flight was welcomed by a high-level delegation, including UAE Ambassador to Syria His Excellency Hassan Ahmed Al Shehhi, Deputy Chairman of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority Mr. Abdul Bari Al-Saj, and Director of the Authority Mr. Amjad Nakhkhal.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
H.E. Al Shehhi hailed the occasion as a reflection of the “deep-rooted and fraternal relations” between the United Arab Emirates and Syria. “The resumption of flydubai’s flights is a promising step toward the full return of UAE national carriers to Syria. It also paves the way for delivering high-quality services to the brotherly Syrian people,” he said.
He further emphasized the UAE’s steadfast support for Syria’s stability and development, stating:
“This milestone underscores the UAE’s continued efforts to enhance regional and international air connectivity, strengthening economic ties and connecting people. Our support for Syria is part of a long-standing commitment to its prosperity and the enduring bonds that unite our two nations.”
A Gateway Reopened
Hamad Obaidalla, Chief Commercial Officer at flydubai, expressed optimism about the route’s reopening.
“flydubai has a longstanding commitment to enhance regional connectivity, and we are very pleased to offer passengers the opportunity to fly directly to Syria once again. Damascus, as an important cultural and historical center in the region, holds great potential for travel, trade, and tourism,” he said.
With daily service now available, flydubai aims to cater to a growing demand for travel between the two nations while supporting broader efforts for regional reintegration and economic cooperation.
This development marks the first scheduled service by a UAE carrier to Syria since 2012, restoring a vital air corridor and signaling a broader warming of diplomatic and commercial relations in the region.
