Meat subsidy revocation: Cabinet evades discussion

Manama

With the cabinet parrying discussions on the date of meat subsidy revocation yesterday, the uncertainty on the matter still lingers on.

According to the earlier decision, the government was to remove subsidy on meat from today onwards. But the Information Affairs Minister, Isa bin Abdulrahman Al-Hammadi said that no discussion had been held during the weekly cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

The Minister informed that meetings were still going on regarding the withdrawal of meat subsidy between the representatives of the legislature and executive branches. “The decision on meat subsidy withdrawal will be taken once the representatives of the legislature and executive branches reach a conclusion,” he added.

Initially, the government said that the meat subsidy would be axed on August 1. Later, the plan to scrap meat subsidy was postponed by a month for review.

The decision to postpone revocation of meat subsidy was taken on July 14, following an order from the Premier.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Bahrain Livestock Company Ibrahim Zainal told DT News that their company would be continuing activities until they receive orders from the government authorities.
