Hue and cry over faulty road design at Budaiya

Residents call for redesign of road in light of increasing mishaps

 Residents of Budaiya have demanded the authorities to reconsider a “deadly design flaw” at the newly opened intersection at the entrance of Budaiya town.

Their demand to redesign the road came close on the heels of the accidents occurred in the area, killing two people a few days ago. Residents claimed that a huge hump in the middle of the intersection leads to the accidents.

The area’s Municipal Council Member Abdulla Al Dossary called upon Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry to take necessary actions to ensure the safety of traffic flow at the newly opened junction.

“Following numerous complaints from residents and field visits to the site, we have found that the fault at the site needs to be corrected. Unfortunately, no actions have been taken by the Ministry yet, despite several notifications during the past four months,” Al Dossary commented.

He confirmed that he was also coordinating with the MPs of the area Hamad Al Dossary and Jalal Kadhem to solve the matter.

Meanwhile, the Ministry explained in a press statement that “the height of the road is safe and is designed to fit the under constriction road leading to the Northern City.”

The Ministry called upon drivers to adhere to the speed limit of the road, stating, “There are no risks, provided the drivers are committed to the speed limit. This part of Budaiya highway will still see more revamps.”

Commenting on the fatal accident that recently killed two people at the intersection, the Ministry said, “It’s advised to view the reports of the concerned authorities to know the causes of the accident. Primary reports issued by the General Directorate of Traffic show the cause of the accident due to over-speeding.”

A field visit was conducted yesterday by Al Dossary, Kadhem, the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Ahmed Al Khayyat and Roads Assistant Undersecretary Huda Fakhro to know the conditions of the road.

As reported earlier, two men were killed and another suffered injuries in a traffic accident that occurred at the intersection in the early hours of Sunday. Another accident took place on the other side of the intersection yesterday. No injuries were reported.
