Bahrain food bill among world’s cheapest

Bahrain’s grocery bills are among the cheapest in the world, according to a recent study by a UK-based analyst firm.

The Kingdom is among the top 25 cheapest countries in the world along with several other GCC countries when it comes to grocery shopping, stated the research by MoveHub.

Qatar was named the cheapest and Kuwait was the third cheapest, while UAE and Saudi Arabia were ranked fifth and sixth respectively.

“The data is based on a weekly shop equal to the UK average (British families spend around 12 per cent of their salaries on grocery staples), calculated by Office of National Statistics in 2013, and adjusted for inflation,” stated the research firm, explaining how the figures were calculated.

“The prices used represent local costs in each country based on purchasing the same items. This - and the fact that certain items may be more expensive in other countries - is why some countries have a weekly shop that exceeds 100pc of the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, in other words, per person,” it added.

MoveHub said that it published the list by using data from Numbeo for its research.

“The most expensive items across the board on this essential grocery list are meat and dairy; families looking to cut these foods out of their diets will have a lower grocery bill,” the statement added.
