MWPS launches New African Help Desk as Q1 cases hit 42 with 85% resolution
The Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) announced plans to launch a dedicated African Communities Help Desk to strengthen assistance for migrant workers, as it reported 42 cases in the first quarter of 2026, with an 85 per cent resolution rate.
The new help desk will focus on supporting African nationals, including communities from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Cameroon. It will coordinate with community leaders and consulates in regional hubs such as Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to provide legal aid, repatriation support, immigration clearance assistance, and access to basic services.
The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the headquarters of YK Almoayyed & Sons, where MWPS said April 2026 alone recorded a 45 per cent case resolution rate.
“This is not just a hotline – it is a bridge,” said MWPS Chairperson Mona Almoayyed, adding that the initiative aims to overcome language and administrative barriers faced by workers.
The organisation said it will also approach authorities to reinstate a full three-month summer midday work ban.
General Secretary Mr. Madhavan Kallath shared data showing the rise in cases over the past years. In 2024, MWPS handled 39 cases. This increased to 86 cases in 2025, of which 77 were resolved, giving a 90 per cent success rate. In the first quarter of 2026, 42 cases were recorded, with strong resolution levels continuing.
Ms. Almoayyed said most cases in Q1 2026 were related to rent and living costs, immigration penalties, medical assistance, travel expenses for returning home, and unpaid salaries highlighting that unpaid wages remain the biggest issue, making up around 80 per cent of all complaints.
Other common problems include repatriation support, legal help, and cases where employers do not complete job transfers or visa cancellations after termination.
MWPS also highlighted its ongoing “Pillars of Partnership” programme, which focuses on awareness campaigns, including informing people about their rights regarding passports, as well as distributing dry food supplies. In 2025, the society supported 1,070 low-wage workers through these efforts.
The briefing was attended by MWPS Vice Chairperson Evone Bhaskaran, Treasurer Kavitasree Suvarna, and Media Committee Head Raji Unnikrishnan.
