The rebuilding of Karzakan Grand Mosque has moved well beyond the early paperwork stage, with the government saying the last building permit is now being sought before work on site begins.
In its written reply to an urgent proposal from Parliament calling for the mosque to be demolished and rebuilt without delay, the government said all key engineering and legal steps had already been dealt with. These include registering the scheme, drawing up plans and technical details, and securing the demolition licence.
It said work is still being done to obtain the final construction permit so that building can start, with the aim of getting the project done quickly and to a good standard.
The government added that the Sunni and Jaafari Waqf Directorates are acting within the powers given to them under Decree No. 6 of 1985, which governs the Sunni and Jaafari Waqf Councils and their administrations.
