During the Nineteenth Ordinary Session of the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Sixth Legislative Term, MPs discussed a proposal to establish a dedicated financial support account for low-income citizens, stressing the need for more structured and sustainable assistance mechanisms.
The proposal, submitted by MP Dr. Ali Al Nuaimi, seeks to create a formal account aimed at supporting citizens whose incomes place them within the limited-income category. Members described the initiative as part of a broader effort to shield vulnerable households from mounting living pressures.
Several MPs linked the proposal to ongoing debates over the cost of living, rising household expenses and the shrinking purchasing power of families earning modest salaries. Members noted that electricity, housing, food and daily commitments continue to weigh heavily on those earning BD600 or less per month.
MPs argued that structured financial support, if properly regulated, could provide more direct and transparent assistance compared with fragmented relief measures. They emphasised the importance of ensuring that any mechanism introduced is clearly defined, financially sustainable and targeted to genuine beneficiaries.
Speakers underlined that support for low-income citizens must be balanced with fiscal discipline and clear eligibility standards. Calls were made for cooperation between the legislative and executive branches to design a framework that delivers relief without compromising economic stability.
The discussion reflected growing consensus within the Council that long-term social protection mechanisms require continuous review to keep pace with changing economic realities.
