Bahrain’s Model of Tolerance Highlighted on International Day of Peaceful Coexistence
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bahrain, Khaled El Mekwad, marked the first observance of the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence on Tuesday, highlighting Bahrain’s leading role in promoting tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect at both national and international levels.
In a statement issued on the occasion, El Mekwad said the new international day reflects a global commitment to understanding, shared humanity and peaceful dialogue. He noted that the observance holds particular significance for Bahrain, whose leadership and advocacy at the United Nations were instrumental in the establishment of the day.
He praised Bahrain’s long-standing model of peaceful coexistence, describing it as one rooted in mutual respect, cultural diversity and interfaith harmony, and said it continues to serve as an example for countries seeking to build inclusive and tolerant societies.
El Mekwad stressed that peace goes beyond the absence of conflict, emphasizing that true peace lies in the ability of people to live together despite differences, while upholding justice and human rights. He described peaceful coexistence as an ongoing process that requires awareness, understanding and active participation from all segments of society.
The statement also underscored the importance of international frameworks such as the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which enshrine principles essential to peaceful coexistence, including equality, non-discrimination and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He added that global initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development further reinforce values of tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect.
At a time of rising instability and conflict in the Middle East and other regions, El Mekwad said the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence serves as an important platform to promote awareness of cultural and religious diversity and to reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations. He also highlighted the crucial role of education in fostering tolerance and combating discrimination.
He concluded by reaffirming the United Nations’ continued support for Bahrain’s efforts to strengthen interfaith dialogue, promote diversity and build bridges among communities, noting that Bahrain’s experience demonstrates that peaceful coexistence is essential for sustainable development, social cohesion and long-term stability.
