Northern Council Seeks Action on Waste Bags Distribution
The decision was taken during the council’s tenth ordinary meeting of the sixth municipal term, fourth session, following detailed discussions on recurring technical failures affecting the machines used to dispense waste bags to residents in the Northern Governorate.
Municipal Council member Abdullah Ashoor, representative of the Sixth Constituency, outlined persistent operational issues linked to the dispensing machines. He said the devices suffer from frequent breakdowns and sudden stoppages, depriving citizens of a basic municipal service and creating daily frustration.
Ashoor noted that councillors receive repeated complaints from residents, with some members reporting several messages each week regarding the same problem. He stressed that the situation is compounded by the limited number of machines available, which remain insufficient even when functioning properly.
At the core of the letter approved by the council is a proposal to coordinate with major commercial outlets to distribute waste bags through supermarket customer service counters. Under the suggested mechanism, eligible residents would be able to receive their allocated bags while carrying out routine shopping, removing dependence on malfunctioning machines.
The proposal calls for organised coordination between municipalities, the ministry, and large retail chains to ensure smooth implementation, accurate distribution, and wider accessibility across residential areas.
Ashoor described the move as a direct response to citizens’ concerns, emphasising that the objective is to simplify procedures and remove unnecessary obstacles from daily life. He said the proposal would enhance service efficiency, expand distribution points, and help restore public confidence in municipal services.
By approving the submission of the letter, the council formally urged the minister to study the proposal and take prompt action, citing its importance and its direct impact on citizens’ quality of life.
