His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Asiri, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Space Agency, participated in the United Nations Conference on Space Law and Policy 2025, organised by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) at the Vienna International Centre.

The conference, held under the theme “Activating Space Sustainability: Legal and Regulatory Approaches Across the Lifecycle of Space Debris,” brought together leading legal experts, policymakers, and astronauts from around the world.

The event focused on translating international principles into practical measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of the outer space environment for future generations.

Importance

Commenting on his participation, Dr. Al-Asiri highlighted the strategic importance of the conference, saying: “This participation represents a valuable opportunity for the Kingdom of Bahrain to engage directly in the global dialogue on the future of space activities. Challenges such as orbital congestion, the need for legal frameworks to address space debris, and emerging operations like active debris removal and in-orbit services are matters of concern for all countries, including Bahrain.

“Our engagement reflects our commitment to developing national capabilities in space law and contributing effectively to shaping the international regulatory landscape.”

He added: “Our participation comes at a pivotal moment, as the Bahrain Space Agency advances work on the draft National Space Law. The international insights and best practices discussed, particularly in sessions on ‘Translating Space Sustainability into National Regulatory Frameworks’ and ‘The Convention on the Rescue and Return of Astronauts and Spacecraft Revenues in a Practical Framework,’ will directly inform our legislative efforts.

“This will ensure alignment with updated international standards, fostering a secure and innovative regulatory environment for a sustainable Bahraini space sector.”
