The Kingdom of Bahrain joined the global community in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the United Nations with a special ceremony held in Manama, highlighting the alignment of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.
Speaking exclusively to The Daily Tribune, Khaled El Mekwad, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bahrain, described the occasion as both symbolic and forward-looking.
“Today’s event is special because we are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, as well as the strong and growing partnership between Bahrain and the UN,” said El Mekwad.
Cooperation framework
He noted that Bahrain and the UN recently signed a new Cooperation Framework at the end of last year, which is now being implemented.
The framework encompasses multiple areas of collaboration, including housing, urban development, healthcare, and economic advancement—all aligned with Bahrain’s national development priorities and the global SDGs.
“There are ongoing projects as well as new initiatives that reflect our shared vision,” El Mekwad added. “We are working closely with the Ministry of Sustainable Development to ensure that the goals are localized and effectively implemented, reaching tangible results across all sectors.”
The celebration served as both a reflection on eight decades of multilateral progress and a renewed pledge to advance sustainable and inclusive development.
As Bahrain continues to integrate the SDGs into its national agenda, the partnership with the UN is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping a resilient and prosperous future for the Kingdom.
