MP Dr Maryam Al Dhaen has backed student-designed plans to cool Isa Town’s traditional market, where summer heat has long made conditions difficult for visitors and traders alike.
The proposals were among the winners of the “Enhancing Outdoor Spaces Cooling in Bahrain” competition.
Two of the selected entries focused on Isa Town market, one of Bahrain’s busiest and most exposed public spaces.
The contest was run by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture in partnership with the University of Bahrain and Bahrain Polytechnic.
It invited students to suggest practical ways to improve comfort in open spaces during the hottest months.
Dr Al Dhaen said the work showed a clear grasp of local needs and praised the involvement of students and staff in tackling problems experienced in many areas of the country.
The lawmaker said she hoped to see the ideas developed into working schemes.
She added that she had raised the matter during a meeting with the Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, His Excellency Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, where other concerns linked to Constituency Two in the Southern Governorate were also discussed.
Dr Al Dhaen also welcomed the collaboration between the ministry and local universities.
