Bins fitted with tracking chips are being introduced across the Northern Governorate, part of a council plan to cut down on waste collection and reduce the number of containers on the streets.
So far, 3,038 have been placed and the goal is 4,200.
The bins send signals to the municipality once they have been emptied.
The data allows the municipality to keep tabs on when each container is used and cleaned, replacing guesswork with numbers.
Idea The idea is to cut the number of bins dramatically, down to one for every 16 homes.
That, according to Northern Municipality director Lamya Al Fadhala, depends on people taking recycling more seriously.
She said the waste contractor is following a set schedule agreed with the ministry and that 64 out of 75 sets of recycling containers requested by councillors are already in place.
Jobs
Recycling, she said, would not only reduce the number of bins needed but could also open up jobs in sorting and reuse.
The council’s chairman, Dr Shubbar Al Wadaei, said the rest of the bins will be delivered in the coming weeks.
He added that recent inspection tours showed most neighbourhoods in good shape when it came to cleanliness.
During the same session yesterday, councillors gave the goahead for a new technical secondary school for boys in Hamad Town.
The school will be built on part of a plot measuring just over 48,000 square metres in Block 1212.
Facility
The proposal was put forward by councillor Abdulla Al Thawadi, who said the town lacks such a facility and that families are having to send their sons elsewhere for this type of education.
He said the project would ease travel burdens and offer students in the area a more practical path. The council also discussed a proposal to convert a public park into a car park in Hamad Town.
Concerns
The Services Committee had raised concerns as the site still contains children’s play equipment.
Councillors added the item to the agenda but after further discussion, voted against sending the request to the authorities.
In a separate point, Dr Salman Mohsen said additional bins had been delivered to his area as part of the council’s efforts to improve waste management in each area.
