A group of MPs have demanded that the government should come forward with a clear stand on Muharraq projects in a public discussion in the Council of Representatives.

The petition, signed by MPs Hamad Al Doy, Abdulwahid Qarata, Maryam Al Saegh, Mohammed Al Aliwi, Hisham Al Asheeri, Hesham Al Awadhi and Abdullah Al Dhaen, lists several demands.

These include the government’s strategy regarding dilapidated buildings and bachelor housing, how efficient its mechanisms are in detecting unsafe housing and regulating bachelor accommodation.

The MPs want clear answers to these long-standing issues, while the explanatory memorandum attached to the request suggests exploring options such as funding new construction projects, renovating old houses, reviewing the dilapidated housing programme, and regulating bachelor housing to meet community needs.

Also, MPs would like to debate projects relevant to Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), evaluation of government’s projects for sustainable development programmes, government’s policy regarding Muharraq tourism sector, which is related to keeping the historical and cultural places, making use of them for the benefit of the cultural tourism.

The request also includes questions about improving Muharraq’s road networks and traffic flow, as well as infrastructure development projects, encompassing electricity, water, and sewage networks to meet the needs of a growing population.

The MPs seek information on future plans to improve public services in education, health, and the environment.

Government approach

They also want to understand the government’s approach to encouraging local and foreign investment in development projects that benefit Muharraq residents, including support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), employment policies, and human development initiatives for the governorate’s residents.

Finally, the request addresses government plans for the rehabilitation of environmentally affected areas and sustainability projects that balance development with environmental protection.
