Weekend holiday crashes sales at Central Market

Sales at Central Market remained low during the weekend due to a  religious holiday, on Friday. Sales of retailers were worst affected, but were not as bad for wholesalers and fishmongers.

“Our sales were hit badly because of the market holiday.  Our weekend sales on Fridays are 75 per cent higher than that on normal days,” said vegetable vendor Shaji Chakkiath to DT News.

Customers also reported inconveniences caused due to the market holiday.

“Usually I buy vegetables and fish for my family on Fridays as I don’t find time to go to market after my office hours on other days. But as it was a holiday last Friday, I had to wake up at 4.30am the next day to go to the market, so that I can reach office by 8am,” a customer, Rajesh Kumar, told DT News.

Fish market remained open on Friday but sales were low due to lack of takers.

Fish prices stayed humble and a few customers were seen at the market taking advantage of this.

“I came because I knew that the rates would be low,” customer Hashim said.

Wholesalers were the least affected as they were able to plan their sales. “This holiday comes every year and we planned accordingly,” said wholesaler Abdul Latheef.
