Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for the Environment Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak bin Daina highlighted Bahrain’s and its GCC partners’ continued collaboration with international organisations to overcome and address the challenges of climate change, particularly in relation to economic diversification efforts.
In a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, on the sidelines of the COP 21 climate change conference in Paris yesterday, he reaffirmed Bahrain’s offer to host a regional centre for the Green Climate Change Fund to serve West Asia, as outlined by Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa during the opening of the conference.
During the meeting, Ban Ki-moon welcomed Bahrain’s commitment and support to UN initiatives and extended his appreciation and gratitude to Bahrain’s leadership.
Ban Ki-moon recalled the consistent and constructive dialogue he had held with the Bahrain Government during his visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The Secretary-General said that he looked forward to visiting Bahrain before the end of his tenure. He reiterated that international collaboration was imperative in efforts to tackle climate change issues.
Expressing Bahrain’s commitment to working with the UN on all fronts, Dr. Daina stressed the importance of addressing global warming and maintaining a safe and sustainable environment.
Dr. Daina also welcomed the important role played by the UN in facilitating funding and support for climate change initiatives.
He noted that the conference provided a unique opportunity for world leaders to address the challenges of climate change and that the Kingdom firmly supported efforts to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius.
