Government to implement plan to tackle stray dogs menace

Manama : A well-studied plan by the Government to resolve the increasing numbers of stray dogs will soon be implemented, it was officially announced yesterday.

Few days after Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry announced that it will begin the second phase of addressing the widespread phenomenon of stray dogs in residential areas, Agriculture Acting Assistant Undersecretary Dr. Ibrahim Yousif confirmed that a meeting was held to discuss the mechanisms of implementing the plan, which includes cooperating with private sector’s licensed veterinarian clinics to carry out castration process on stray dogs to stop their breeding.

Dr. Yousif confirmed that the ministry will call on the clinics to offer their tenders through Bahrain Tender Board. 

He commented, “This meeting reflects the beginning of the joint work between the municipalities in the Ministry and the private sector to reduce the phenomenon of stray dogs.”

The official also said that it was also discussed during the meeting, the means of strengthening of the current campaign procedures to presently deal with the phenomenon of stray dogs and in the long term, in accordance with the standards and methods used at the global level”.

The ministry had announced on Thursday that it will bear the costs of carrying out these operations until the completion of the construction of a permanent shelter for stray animals within this year in Ma’ameer village.
