MPs to vote on workers’ deportation expenses

ManamaA committee in the House of Representatives recommended obliging foreign workers who ‘runaway’ from their employers to pay all of their deportation expenses.

This was announced by Services Committee which recently approved a proposal to oblige expats, who violate the conditions mentioned in their work permits, of paying all the expenses of their deportation and exempt employers from paying them.

Committee members said “the proposal would protect employers and businesses, in addition to contributing to eradicating the irregular employment phenomenon”.

Originally submitted by MPs Abdulrahman Bumjaid and Khalid Al Shaer, the proposal is believed to “come in line with the rules and regulations related to labour conditions and doesn’t contradict with human rights principles”.

Labour Market Regulatory Authority suggested reconsidering the proposal as it may harm the interests of employees if implemented, while Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry supported it.

Anyhow, MPs will review and vote on the proposal this Tuesday.
