Hurafuna returns in Bahrain

ManamaThe second edition of ‘Hurafuna’ Handicrafts Festival got off to a colourful start yesterday in Bab Al Bahrain, showcasing traditional hand-made products by Bahraini craftsmen.

More than 18 local craftsmen are participating in the festival, which will run for a period of one week until 18 April 2017.

Products on display include hand-weaved baskets, traditional musical instruments, wooden boxes, pottery, model ships and much more. The festival also includes live performances by traditional Bahraini bands. Entry is free.

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani said, “The event comes in line with the strategy of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) to attract tourists and visitors from all over the world.”

The inauguration was held in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer of BTEA, Shaikh Khaled bin Humood Al Khalifa, representatives from the authority and other guests.

“Manama Souq is one of the key locations in Bahrain that attracts Formula One visitors,” the minister added.

BTEA through its projects aims to position the Kingdom as a distinctive family tourism destination offering unique local goods and attractions.

Chief Executive Officer of BTEA, Shaikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa said, “We are hosting this event during the Formula One season to introduce and promote our handicraft industry to tourists from the region and around the world. Hurafuna is a unique event that appeals to the entire family.”

Shaikh Khalid also revealed that the authority has launched a training programme for artisans as well as created a ‘seal of excellence’ to differentiate high-quality Bahraini crafts from counterfeit products.
