Impose fine on slow drivers: MP

ManamaBahraini parliamentarian yesterday called for imposing fine on “slow drivers” who he says disrupt the flow of traffic and confuse other drivers. MP Khalifa Al Ghanem submitted three proposals yesterday to amend the traffic law.

The proposals included imposing fines on slow drivers, and suggested increasing the speed limits of roads and prohibit deliberate slow driving.

“Deliberately driving slowly on roads, in a way that hinders the flow of traffic, should be considered as a traffic offence. This confuses the other drivers and may result into accidents and traffic congestions,” Al Ghanem said in a statement issued here yesterday.

The MP, who is also the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee Deputy Chairman, linked such behaviours to the speed limits of roads, who he said “should be revised”.

“When speed limits aren’t relevant to the nature of the streets, drivers are forced to drive slowly to commit to them. In case they cross the speed limits they are slapped with high fines. The speed limits of many roads should be revised and increased,” he explained.

Al Ghanem statements came while he stressed that “traffic laws should protect drivers and save lives”.

He also submitted two more proposals that stipulated fixing “clear signs” indicating that speed monitoring cameras are fixed on roads, commenting that drivers should be aware and not surprised by these cameras so they can be more cautious while driving.

“Drivers in Bahrain, citizens and residents, are among the best in the world in terms of commitment and adhering to traffic laws. It is clear that the awareness campaigns conducted by the General Directorate of Traffic aren’t effective. The recent public outcry over traffic offences and the increase of fines prove it. Traffic laws should be improved to reward the drivers in Bahrain and contribute to protecting them,” the lawmaker added.
