Housemaid stranded in Bahrain

Manama : An Indian housemaid whose health is deteriorating, is unable to return to her hometown as her family can’t pay the huge amount demanded by the agent who recruited her to Bahrain. Gudivada Kumari (32) who came to Bahrain through an Indian agent named Kondru Venkat, is in a helpless situation now. Seeking a better future she came to Bahrain on November 14,2015, according to the complaint submitted by her mother K. Jayamma to the Indian Embassy in Bahrain.

Kumari worked for some days in a house but due to the miserable working conditions she was suffering and told her pathetic situation to her mother in India. It’s in these circumstances that her mother sought the help of the Indian Embassy.

Kumari’s boss was willing to hand over the passport and money but the man power agency in Bahrain is demanding her agent’s permission for her departure. The agent Kondru Venkat who is in India is insisting her to work in another place, according to the mother’s complaint.

‘He (the agent) asked us to pay INR 100000 to send back my daughter to India. But we are very poor, we are not in a position to pay the said amount,’ her mother Jayamma told DT News when contacted today.

Gudivada Kumari hails from the East Godavari district of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh. Her husband Yedukondalu and two children are in India.

The complaint was brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy via its official Twitter account on January 15 by Kumari’s brother Surya Kiran. It was Surya Kiran’s first tweet on the social media and the Indian Embassy has replied that the matter is being looked into and that they will revert soon.
