US aircraft carrier docks in Bahrain

Manama : Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) docked in Bahrain for a port visit, after a gap of three

years.

The crew of the carrier, took a break after 50 consecutive days at sea, to rest and explore the country.

A good number of sailors, who had never been to a Middle Eastern country before, enjoyed sightseeing tours hosted by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). Several events were organised, including trips to a spa.

The sailors learnt more about the culture and history of the region after visiting national monuments such as the Al-Fateh Mosque, Bahrain World Trade Centre and a 4,000-year-old fortress.

“It was awesome to get off the ship for a few days,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Skylar Halbeisen. “Bahrain is a beautiful country and I’m looking forward to coming back here again.”

The crew, before returning, also got the opportunity to get some exercise and cheer on their shipmates in rugby, basketball, softball and soccer games with local Bahraini teams.

Ike is part of the first carrier strike group,  deployed under the new Optimised Fleet Response Plan (OFRP). The carrier is also the centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet of 2016, an initiative that demonstrates efforts to transform energy and use it as a strategic resource. (navy.mil)
