The importance of national loyalty
15-Jun-2017

The decision of the Kingdom of Bahrain to cut diplomatic ties with Qatar under the maintenance of national security was supported by Bahraini citizens and reflects the unity between the citizens and the government in their determination to combat foreign and domestic threats.

Loyalty is a fundamental condition for the existence of any state, and both governments and citizens should be loyal to their community in their thoughts and actions. Love of one’s homeland is a natural instinct related to self-preservation and survival for oneself and loved ones. Loyalty has always been the defining characteristic of good citizens and it helps maintain security in communities. States must foster and preserve loyalty as a core part of their security that is just as important as military power (if not more so). In the challenging modern global environment it is more important than ever to promote citizens’ loyalty to face the threat of international terrorism, especially due to the proximity of the terrorism centers in the Middle East, which constantly seek to attack and weaken regional states through hidden networks.

Part of loyalty to the state is loyalty to its personnel, and if citizens lack the feeling of solidarity, and belonging within the global network power society they may react violently due to their feeling of insecurity. Belonging to an entity is a personal need for human individuals to behave moderately and feel securely, and the absence of a proper sense of belonging and loyalty to the country may present a breach eagerly exploited by terrorists and extremist groups, who can harness vulnerable people’s need for such belonging and loyalty to their own perverse groups and aims.

Loyalty and its associated concepts of defending, advocating and jealously protecting the country are more needed in times of crisis. We have seen the high dose of loyalty observed in the media in general and  in the social media in particular, after the resolution of the Kingdom of Bahrain to diplomatically isolate Qatar in order to maintain the Kingdom’s security, which inspired me as an observer to write about it.

The social media peaked with posts in favor of the Kingdom’s position and full of prayers in this holy month to maintain the nation’s security and peace. Those loyal citizens who support and defend their homeland are influenced by the strong feeling of belonging and care which is a healthy sociological phenomenon that provides further security for states and peoples. The citizens did not remain silent but on the contrary they positively reacted with their state’s positions and decisions, and this by defending their nation in the social media and thus presenting a crucial front of national loyalty. Those Bahraini citizens and residents throughout Bahrain have expressed their allegiance and loyalty to the Kingdom, making us all proud of their steadfast faith in their identity and their readiness to defend Bahrain.
