Additional shipment of livestock reaches Bahrain

Manama : A new shipment of livestock, sourced from Oman and Jordan, to meet the increased demand for meat during Eid Al Adha has reached Bahrain last week, a top official said.

“Shipments of 1,500 sheep from Oman and 700 from Jordan reached the Kingdom on Tuesday through Khalifa bin Salman Port and King Fahad Causeway,” said Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs Undersecretary Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa  in a statement.

The official also confirmed that they were expecting another shipment from Djibouti on Wednesday, but didn’t reach.

Shaikh Khalifa said the animals will be kept in quarantine for three days to ensure safety, before distributing it in the local market.

“Work teams and veterinarians are working around the clock as the demand for livestock has peaked,” he added.

The ministry said last week that “specialised veterinary teams will carry out tests to ensure the safety of the slaughtered animals in the Kingdom”.

Animal Health and Control Department has also suspended all veterinarians’ vacations and formed an emergency team to cover all working hours.

According to the ministry, the approved slaughterhouses in the Kingdom are Hamala Abattoir and the five temporary abattoirs in its vicinity including Al Reem Company Abattoir, Muharraq Abattoir and the two mobile abattoirs in Riffa.
