Bahrain bags seven more medals

SharjahBahrain added seven medals to their tally at the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

On the second day of the tournament, Bahrain Shooting Club clinched two gold medals in the 10m pistol team and singles event, in addition to a silver medal in the singles. 

The nationals topped the team section, scoring 1,651 points in total to secure the gold medal. They were followed by Sharjah Ladies Club (1,637) and Oman (1,596) in second and third places, respectively.

In the singles event, Mouza Abdulrahim put on a superb performance to win the competition’s gold. Second was another Bahraini Aisha Al Braiki to wrap up the shooting trio medal triumph.

Early on, Al Hala Club’s Maram Mohammed and Maha Mohammed both settled for third place and the bronze medal at the Fencing floret singles section after a brave show at Sajaya Young Ladies Club.

Bahrain added two more medals in the floret and epee team events, taking home the silver and bronze medals, respectively. 

The results lifted Bahrain’s total of medals to eight after two days of action. Fai Janahi opened Bahrain’s medal account at the tournament, taking home the karate’s kumite under-50kg weight category.

Meanwhile, the Youth and Sports Ministry team started their title quest with a convincing 76-58 win over Somalia’s Mogadishu Club at Sharjah Girls Hall.

The Bahrainis, coached by national tactician Fadel Milad, ruled the game from start to finish for a well-deserved victory.

Brandie Rene and Tabyatha Donne topped scored for the Youth and Sports Ministry team, which proved vital. The Bahrainis face Jeddah United of Saudi Arabia in their second match tonight.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club kick-started their campaign in the volleyball tournament with a 1-3 (12-25, 25-23, 19-25, 18-25) defeat to defending champions Al-Wasl of the UAE. Muharraq takes on Sharjah Club in their second match of the competition.

Bahrain is sending eight teams to the tournament, being organaised for the fourth successive time. Other teams in the fray include Bahrain Club (table tennis, shooting, archery), Busaiteen (athletics) and Bahrain Karate Academy (karate).

A total of 68 teams from 16 countries, represented by more than 1,000 athletes are taking part in the event.

In addition to Bahrain, other countries taking part are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Somalia and Djibouti and hosts the UAE.
