UK Closes Jerusalem Consulate After Israeli Order, Keeps Vital Services

Jerusalem: The United Kingdom has ended the formal functions of its consulate in Jerusalem after an Israeli order to close the operation, marking a significant change to Britain’s diplomatic presence in the city.

Israel said that the British Consulate General had halted operations, with the majority of diplomats set to depart. A small number of British diplomats will stay in Jerusalem as part of a reduced UK diplomatic presence.

Britain confirmed that the consulate had closed in its previous form, but stated that it would continue to provide ‘vital services’ to Palestinians and conduct diplomatic work through a new UK Mission in Jerusalem.

The UK has rejected Israel’s authority to shut the consulate, arguing that East Jerusalem is occupied territory. The dispute follows growing tensions between London and Tel Aviv over Israeli policies in the occupied West Bank, including Britain’s sanctions targeting settlement activity.

The consulate had served as Britain’s main diplomatic link with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza for decades. The closure represents a notable downgrade in the UK’s diplomatic presence in Jerusalem, although Britain says essential services and engagement with Palestinians will continue.
