Germany Blames Russia for Leipzig Airport Drone Attack

Berlin: Germany accuses Russia of being behind the planned drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, citing police investigations, intelligence findings, and gadget features that lead to Russian state involvement. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the incident was part of a larger pattern of Russian hybrid operations against European countries.

The explosive-laden drone was spotted near a Ukrainian cargo plane in the airport's security zone. Authorities safely defused the explosive, avoiding casualties and significant damage. German officials stated the drone's structure, components, explosives, and detonator resembled technology previously associated with Russian operations.

Dobrindt called the strike as a severe escalation and warned Germany to expect more hybrid warfare tactics, including as sabotage and other forms of disruption. Leipzig/Halle is a major cargo hub that also handles military transit for Germany, NATO, and Ukraine.

Germany has taken diplomatic action in response. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that Russia's consulate in Bonn would dissolve on September 18, as would the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. Berlin is also pursuing extra European sanctions on people linked to Russian activities.

Russia has dismissed Germany's accusations, calling them false and politically motivated. The Russian embassy cautioned that Berlin's response marked a significant escalation in already tense relations. However, Germany claims that the Leipzig incident was not an isolated incident and is part of a larger campaign of suspected Russian hybrid activities across Europe.
