Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: At least 14 worshippers were killed and several others injured when a heavy rain-triggered landslide swept through a hillside monastery in northern Ethiopia’s Amhara region.

The disaster struck early Monday morning at the Tsadqane Debre Mitmaq St. Mary Monastery in Sela Dingay, where hundreds had gathered for a holy water cleansing ritual aimed at spiritual healing.

Heavy overnight thunderstorms caused mud and massive boulders to dislodge, crashing directly onto worshippers assembled near the mountainside.

Local authorities and emergency personnel deployed specialized disaster teams to assist in search and rescue efforts, while the severely injured were transported to nearby Debre Birhan Hospital.

The tragedy comes during Ethiopia’s peak Kiremt rainy season, running from June to September, which frequently triggers flash floods and deadly mudslides across the country’s high-altitude rural regions.
