Nepal PM urges calm after communal unrest leaves 3 dead

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged calm across Nepal on Thursday following communal clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups in the country's southern region that left three people dead.
The violence broke out in Sunsari district near the Indian border after a dispute arose over loud music and religious flags during a Hindu procession. Police opened fire to disperse rioters, leading to two fatalities. A third man was killed Thursday during demonstrations in neighboring Siraha district while a curfew was in force.
Delivering his first address to the nation since taking office in March, Shah called on citizens, religious leaders, and political parties to exercise restraint and protect national unity.
Local authorities have imposed curfews across affected southern districts to prevent further clashes, while police forces remain on high alert. Shah promised a fair and transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
