Hanoi: A speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized off Vietnam's Phu Quoc island on Saturday, resulting in at least 15 fatalities. The accident occurred approximately 400 meters off May Rut Ngoai islet.
Reports indicate the vessel was carrying 36 people when it overturned. Local authorities and coast guards launched a rescue effort, transporting 21 individuals to the hospital, with two reported to be in critical condition.
While the investigation is ongoing, officials suggest that heavy winds and high waves likely caused the boat to capsize. India's embassy is currently working to ascertain the exact details regarding the tourists involved.
Boating accidents remain a frequent concern in Vietnam due to extreme weather and maintenance issues. This incident follows a similar tragedy in Ha Long Bay last year.
