17 Year Old Found Dead Near Pattaya; Australian Tourist Held While Trying to Leave Thailand

Bangkok : Thai authorities have arrested an Australian man who was attempting to fly out of the country after investigators linked him to the death of a 17-year-old girl whose body was discovered inside a suitcase near Pattaya.

Police said the suspect, identified as 46 yearold Simon Carman, was detained at Bangkok's main international airport on Friday evening before boarding a flight to Perth. The arrest came hours after the teenager's friends alerted authorities when she failed to return home.

Investigators traced the girl's last known movements through surveillance footage, which reportedly showed her entering a condominium with the suspect. Later footage allegedly captured the man transporting a large suitcase away from the building on a motorbike.

The victim's body was later found abandoned near a railway track. Police said preliminary findings indicated she had been violently assaulted before her death.

Authorities said physical marks found on the suspect were consistent with signs of a struggle, although Carman has denied involvement in the killing. He is being questioned on multiple allegations, including murder and concealing a body.

The case has sparked renewed scrutiny of crimes involving foreign nationals in Thailand, where authorities recently tightened visa-free entry rules following a series of high-profile criminal investigations involving tourists and expatriates.
