Ukraine Rejects Russian Claims Of New Advances In Sumy Region

Kyiv: Ukraine’s military has denied Russian claims that its forces captured another village in the northeastern Sumy region, as fighting continues along the border areas between the two countries.

The denial came after Russia announced that it had taken control of two villages in the region, where Moscow says it is trying to create a wider buffer zone near the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine’s 14th Army rejected the claim regarding one of the villages and said fighting in the area was continuing.

Russia currently controls around one-fifth of Ukrainian territory and has continued its long-running offensive in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk region. Moscow has regularly announced the capture of small settlements as part of its campaign to expand territorial control.

However, Ukrainian military officials said in recent weeks that Russian advances have slowed compared to earlier stages of the war. Kyiv also claims its forces are now in a stronger defensive position than they have been for several months.

The fighting around Sumy comes as both sides continue cross-border attacks and drone strikes while the broader war enters another year with no sign of a major breakthrough on the battlefield.
